What We Do

What We Do

CIEA offers three core programs. Together, these programs empower the California Indian communities to practice subsistence fishing cultures, avoid mercury and PCBs in fish, and self-advocate for California lands.

Mercury Tribal Health– CIEA encourages eating traditional fish which are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. However, some fish contain mercury. We teach how to avoid mercury and PCBs in wild-caught and store-bought fish. We also offer free educational presentations to health clinics, WIC programs, and for California Tribes. Click here to learn more

Tribal Self-Advocacy– We provide technical assistance for Tribal leadership and Tribal staff to increase capacity in order for Tribes to advocate on their own behalf for the benefit of their own People. Click here to learn more

Native Youth Environmental Leadership– This program provides students and community members with valuable experiences to address environmental toxins affecting Native communities. This program also has pathways to academic success through college internships, Fellowships through California Tribes, and through education for jr. high and high school youth. Click here to learn more
